Hayes & Coney Hall Councillors have begun a campaign to save additional services on the 138 bus route.
This comes as Coney Hall residents last week found out, without warning, that the bus – the only service to traverse the majority of the Coney Hall estate – had been cut in frequency from 3 per hour to 2. In response, Cllrs. Coldspring-White, Michael and Turrell wrote to Transport for London (TfL) explaining their frustrations at the lack of consultation for the change, and the widespread anger from residents that their crucial bus service – which is used by commuters, students and elderly residents alike – had been reduced in frequency. Councillors have also begun a petition that residents can sign, which will be presented by Cllr. Turrell in his capacity as London Assembly member for Bexley and Bromley to Transport for London in the coming months.
Residents across Coney Hall are also grappling with the potential axe of the 654 bus route, which could lead to more crowding on local services like the 358.
Cllr. Josh Coldspring-White said:
“Residents had ULEZ imposed on them, but as compensation were told they would receive increased investment in public transport. Instead, TfL wants to axe the 654 bus route and has now reduced the frequency of the vital 138 service – all whilst expanding the Superloop in Inner London and providing free bus service along the Silvertown Tunnel.
“Hayes and Coney Hall deserves so much better than this.
“Alexa, Tom and I want to assure residents that we are on the case, liaising with TfL to express residents’ frustrations. We hope this, along with the petition we have set up, will show TfL and Sadiq Khan that residents will not take lightly to this service – crucial for commuters, students and elderly residents – being cut without notice.”
